Shot in South Africa, Golden Hour captures two female dancers who train at Cape Town's Jazzart Theatre Dance, a company and school that prioritises giving opportunities to artists from disadvantaged backgrounds. Through this uplifting series of images, Rocio Chacon represents Black beauty in freedom and power within a visual space where “all is vibrant, full of life, and projecting energy.”

Reflecting on her role as a white woman creating alongside Black creatives, Chacon comments:

“When working with Black people, and especially Black women, there are layers to being photographed, seen and represented that I need to take into account. As women, we share a lot, but we also have very diverse experiences. By understanding these experiences and feelings, and learning about the history attached to them, we can unlock the truth of racist issues that still arise today.”

“I work with dancers because they are connected with their bodies and their beauty, and therefore with their feelings. And I think this comes through the images.”
